Retailers gear up for return fraud

Retailers gear up for return fraud ............................................ WJACTV Johnstown Published on Mar 11, 2015 ............... Reported by: Jackalyn Kovac .......................................................... JOHNSTOWN, Pa. ‚" With those good deals on the day after Christmas sales, gift returns can be a hassle for some retailers, especially if the item being returned was stolen. According to the National Retail Federation's 2014 return fraud survey, retailers estimate $3.8 billion will be lost to return fraud this holiday season. "A fraudulent return is either something that was not purchased here and the customer would like to return it here," said James Millsap, general manager of Best Buy in Johnstown. "Another fraudulent return could be someone taking an item from another customer and also trying to return it, even though it was bought here." According to the survey, more than 90 percent of the retailers said they have experienced the return of stolen merchandise in the last year. As more shoppers look to digital receipts for ease and convenience, retailers are noticing increasing return fraud instances with e-receipts. According to the National Retail Federation, one of the biggest issues for retailers is the practice of "wardrobing" where used or non-defective items, like special occasion clothing or electronics, are returned. No matter how it's done, paying customers are ultimately paying for those returns. "They have to wait in those long lines with us hassling with these fraudulent returns," said Millsap. "A lot of times, people make a scene and we want everyone to have a good time when they come in here." Many retailers try to make up the difference in cost by cutting staff hours or raising item costs. Most retailers now require identification along with a return. To make the return process smoother, experts encourage having your ID and receipt ready with your return. Expungements vs. Pardons. What's the Difference?

Expungements vs. Pardons. What's the Difference? ................................... V. S. Law Published on Dec 16, 2015 ........................ Have you or someone you know ever been convicted of an offense but after a while wondered if that offense could be cleaned from a record? If you know of someone with a conviction and he or she has never wondered if an offense could be wiped, they should. Two ways to do this are through expungements and pardons. Do you know what they are, and do you know the difference between them? Attorney Grant Varner explains, “Expungement is available for a large number of offenses.” He discusses the processes, applications, and fees involved, along with the agency that must process the expungement application and, if successful, the expungement order. Pardons are different in that, for state offenses, the governor issues the pardon and, in essence, forgives the crime. “Expungements are not so hard to come by if you meet all of the requirements,” according to Varner. “A pardon,” he says, “is substantially harder to obtain.” He also clarifies that while the governor must pardon a state offense, only the president can pardon a federal offense. * To obtain a background check from the South Carolina State Law Enforcement Division (SLED), visit: https://catch.sled.sc.gov. * To apply for an expungement in South Carolina’s 13th Judicial Circuit (Greenville and Pickens Counties), visit: http://www.greenvillecounty.org/solic.... * To apply for an expungement in South Carolina’s 7th Judicial Circuit (Spartanburg and Cherokee Counties), visit: http://www.spartanburgcounty.org/govt.... * To apply for an expungement in South Carolina’s 10th Judicial Circuit (Anderson and Oconee Counties), read information available from the South Carolina Judicial Department at: http://www.judicial.state.sc.us/expun....
