SPARTANBURG, SC (FOX Carolina) - The Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office said a man is in custody after the sexual assault of a child resulted in a pregnancy. Deputies said a young girl came forward at school in February and notified personnel she was pregnant, but said the father was someone close to her age. Deputies launched an investigation during which the victim admitted she had been afraid to tell her mother the truth. She was referred to the Children's Advocacy Center. The victim told deputies 29-year-old Derrick Kendall Burris started sexually abusing her during the summer before sixth grade, when she was 10 years old. She reportedly became pregnant at 11 years old and gave birth to the baby at age 12 in May. After the baby was born, investigators said DNA samples confirmed Burris is the father of the child. He was charged on Aug. 30 with first-degree criminal sexual conduct with a minor. He was taken into custody on Wednesday when the Spartanburg County warrants division spotted his vehicle.
